Why Do Catholics Confess to a Priest?

One of the most misunderstood teachings of the Catholic Church is confession. Many people, Catholics and non-Catholics alike, wonder, "Why do Catholics confess their sins to a priest? Can't we just go directly to God?"

The short answer? Yes, we confess to God, but we do so through the ministry Jesus himself established.

Let's go straight to the Bible.

In John 20:21-23, after his resurrection, Jesus appears to his apostles and says, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, so I send you." Then the Gospel tells us: "He breathed on them and said, 'Receive the Holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive, they are forgiven; and whose sins you retain, they are retained.'"

Robert Francis Prevost (now Pope Leo XIV) was raised in a modest and simple household, and his early years were influenced by the integration of his intelligence and humility. He was drawn as a young man to the more profound, subdued facets of knowledge and faith rather than the limelight of the world. His experience made his words and deeds even more significant as he grew older. He rose to prominence as a spiritual leader, providing consolation and direction to others in his vicinity.  

Who would have expected that the Holy Spirit would select him to lead the Catholic Church, despite the fact that he was not as well-known as some of his contemporaries? He is the first pope from the Order of Saint Augustine, and this represents a turning point in the history of both the religious order and the Church. Because of this, his Augustinian upbringing would have a significant impact on his papacy, affecting his views on service, charity, community, and unity. All of these are essential tenets of Augustinian spirituality.

L’AMORE DI CRISTO CI SPINGE

Carissimi fratelli e sorelle della comunità,

oggi vorremmo condividere con voi alcune parole dalla Polonia, riguardo alla nostra vita comunitaria quotidiana.

Vivendo le parole del Vangelo, come comunità ci lasciamo profondamente ispirare dal motto tratto dalle parole di San Paolo: «L'amore di Cristo ci spinge» (2 Cor 5,14). Queste parole sono un profondo richiamo affinché l’amore di Gesù sia la fonte e la motivazione di ogni azione all’interno della comunità cattolica. Non si tratta di un amore qualsiasi, ma di quell’amore che Cristo ha manifestato sulla croce – un amore gratuito, fedele, misericordioso e sacrificale. Quando i membri della comunità vivono questo amore, diventano autentici testimoni del Vangelo.
